Freaking out about Sci-fi & Moives

2012 Movie Trailers

2011 was a great year for films. Some really great films though none of them came close to beating the box office success of Avatar which is probably unlikely to happen until Avatar 2 and 3 come out in 2014/15, though the Dark Knight Rising might come close to it.
There were some really great films and some unexpected gems like Thor. (I really thought that would not work and fit with the Marvel Comics Movie universe, but it did and was very enjoyable.)

2012 look to be another great year, with a few remakes of classic, such as Total Recall and Red Dawn. There is the rebooting of the spiderman franchise and load of sequel/Prequels that are due out.

Here are the Trailers for some of these films, some have been out for few months but I posted them anyways as they are due out this year.

John Carter is from the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ 11-volume Barsoom series. The film is largely based on A Princess of Mars, the first novel to feature John Carter.
The film has been in development hell since the 1931, MGM held the rights for the film up to the 80’s when Disney acquired then in the 80’s. It was going to be directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) and star Tom Cruise, The project collapsed because McTiernan realized that visual effects were not yet advanced enough to recreate Burroughs’ vision. The rights where then bought by Paramount.
The project changes directors and had new scripts written. But the project never went into production. August 2006 Paramount chose not to renew the film rights, preferring to focus on Star Trek instead. Disney reacquired the rights to the film.

The Dark Knight Rises is the last Batman film to be filmed by Christopher Nolan and the last to star Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.
It has been rumoured that Warner Brothers, has already started looking at restarting the Batman franchise, leaving alone, unlike they did with the Tim Burton series, where it just went from gothic dark to campiest with directed by Joel Schumacher.

Prometheus is the return of director Ridley Scott to Science Fiction films.
20th Century Fox wanted to renew the Alien franchise, as the last films in the series where not popular among fans. They brought Scot back to breath new life into it. Prometheus started out as a prequel to the Alien film which was directed Scott.
After a few scripts Scot felt that he could not do a prequel story with the Alien, But he felt that he could still do a prequel set in the same universe and set the story around the mysterious Space-Jockey that was seen in Alien and search for the origins of humanity.

Brave is Pixar’s first fairy tale, and is somewhat darker and more mature in tone than their previous films. It takes place during the 10th century in the highlands of Scotland.
Merida is the first female protagonist in a Pixar film. She was originally going to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon, but she declined due to scheduling issues. Instead, the character will be voiced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.
No doubt Brave will retain the magic that makes the Pixar movies so much fun to watch.

Marvel has been building up to this film for some time now. This started with Incredible Hulk and Iron Man, the next film to set up a Character and the world they live in was Thor followed by Captain America.
The star of these films have all came back except for Edward Norton who has been replaced my Mark Ruffalo.
The film is directed by Cult fav Joss Whedon. This is defiantly one film to look out for.

Ghost Rider is another Marvel comic movie though this is one of the few Marvel comic movies that are not tied to Avengers movie. The first film was not a success but Nick Cage has returned to play the lead role.
It has been stated that this film is not a sequel to 2007 film, but a reboot.

American Reunion It is the eighth installment in the American Pie film series and the fourth in the original series of American Pie (1999)
The film reunites all of the original cast for a school reunion.
I was a massive fan of the first three films, so was very disappointed with the spin off films that went straight to video.
As this bring back all the original cast I am look forward to seeing this.

What can I say about battleship except that it is based on the Hasbro board game.
That right it’s based on a board game. But given the success Hasbro has had with Transformers and G.I. Joe it not surprising that they would try another of they toy lines. The trailer has a very Michael Bay look to it, even though he did not film it.
No doubt this film will be a take your brain out and watch. But it a summer Blockbuster so what more can you expect. There are rumors that some one is trying to get Asteroids made into a film, so what next PONG the movie?

It’s been some time since Men in Black 2 came out and I was not a huge fan of that, I still prefer the first film. But Men in Black 3 looks like it could be a great film and taking Will Smith back to his comedy roots.

G.I Joe was not very popular with film critics however it did make enough money to get a sequel made. G.I Joe: Retaliation is set after the first film and carries on from where that film left off.
Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce and Lee Byung-hun reprising their roles from the first film, and Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis join the cast.

The Amazing Spider-Man is a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.
While Sam Raimi version was close to the comics. This film is doing away with the bio web shooter and going back to the comic version of having them being mechanical. It also look from the trailer that it is retaining that Peter parents where members of S.H.I.E.L.D, so this film could also be part of the Marvel Movie Universe. It is well know that Samuel Jackson has a 9 picture deal with Marvel so don’t be surprise if he turns up at one point in the film.

The Expendables 2 is directed by Simon West, written by Sylvester Stallone and based on characters created by David Callaham. The Expendables 2 see the return of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews. Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme join the cast. While Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, are said to have larger roll.

The Hobbit has been in and out of Development Hell since The Lord of the Rings trilogy was completed. But thankfully Peter Jackson has come back to the Directors Chair to film both films.

That is just some of the films coming this year and where still waiting for the trailers for The Bourne Legacy, Dredd, Total Recall, Red Dawn and Skyfall.
Expect to see film reviews for some of these films from me in the coming year.

  1. I don’t know, the Ghost Rider film sure as hell looks like a sequel to me. I’ve got the first film and it looks like it follows the events in it. (but, looks can be deceiving) I didn’t know they were even making a new one, but I’ll definitely have to see it.

Thanks for the sneak peeks. I’m looking forward to GI Joe Retaliation, Expendables 2, The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man looks good too. Though, I hope they have him actually use his brains to fight bad guys, like he did in the comics. In the previous films, you never once saw him use science to fight the villains. I’m not sure about The Dark Knight Rises. It looks OK to me. I hope it’s better than it looks. Prometheus looks pretty good too. Though, if the space jockey thing is from an alien race, as it appeared to be in the original film, I’m wondering why there are humans in the film.

  2. They have been waiting to make another Ghost Rider film since the first. But seeing how bad it did, it was best to wait a bit. Even from day one Nick Cage had been confirmed as playing the lead role.

With Prometheus, I have read that Human go out looking for ET, they come across another Space Jockey. This leads them to believe that Humanity did not start on Earth.
I also looked at the plot synopsise on IMDB and Wiki and they say much the same thing.

    • I like the first Ghost Rider, I have no idea why it didn’t do well. I mean, Peter Fonda played the devil, how cool is that? 😉 I never really read the GR comics, so that probably enhanced my enjoyment of it. I’m glad they did a sequel.

As to Prometheus, that’s not the same Space Jockey from Alien? I guess that makes it OK, then. I’ll have to see it when it hits DVD. 🙂

    • I just had a thought. In Alien, Mother (the computer) overrode the humans’ orders to check out the planet when it go the alien signal. It had orders to do so. That makes sense, if that wasn’t the first time humans had been in contact with that race. I don’t know why i never thought of that before.
