American Reunion, Film Reivew.
American Pie (1999) is my generation Porky’s (1982). We got two more, big screen outing with American Pie 2 (2001) & American Wedding (2003).
We got to see these friends lose their virginity at the end of high school, meet up again for their first Spring Break and watch one of the gang get married.
In each film they got up to zany antics.
Unfortunately the franchise went straight to video with three more films, American Pie Presents: Band Camp (2005), American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile (2006) & American Pie Presents: The Book of Love (2009). The only character that appeared in these movies was Jim’s dad, Mr Levenstein (Eugene Levy).
You could see why these films went straight to video as they did not come close to the entrainment that was American Pie. They are still fun to watch when there is nothing on TV, but that about it.
After I saw American Wedding I knew the only way we would get to see the original gang together again would be for a high school reunion, but doubted that would ever get made.
Fast forward nine year and we get American Reunion; the fourth film to hit the big screen with all the original character included many of the background characters.
In American Reunion, everyone has grown apart and only keep in touch with the odd phone call or e-mail. With their high school reunion coming up the gang agree to head back to town a few days early so that they can hangout just like when they where in high school.
You can see straight away that they have all grown up and it look unlikely that they will get up to the same zany antic you saw in the first three films. But that all changes once the outcast of the group turns up. Stifler (Seann William Scott) has not changed a bit since high school, and this is where the antic starts.
American Reunion starts off well, however it slows down in the middle, this manly due to the fact that the film tries to deal with the adult problems the gang is having in an adult way. Which does not suit the flow of the film or the film franchise.
I expected the gang to get up to their old zany antics but this is not the case. A lot of the laughs come from Seann William Scott just like in the other films.
If your new to the American Pie franchise, I would say leave this film for the moment and see the first three films in order, before coming to this one.
If you’re a fan of the original film, then there is lot to see and some cameos such as Nadia and Sherman “The Sherminator”.
John Cho had a small role in each of original films as MILF guy #2. It’s nice to see that his role has been expanded a little more in this outing.
All in all, American Reunion is a fun film, but not as fun as the original. However it is still better than the straight to video films. Will we ever get another slice of pie with the original cast? I don’t think so, but it has been left open for another film as the gang agree to meet up more often.
I give this film a 2.5 out of 5.
Good but could have been better.
Stifler’s Mom: I once caught Steven sticking my hairbrush up his ass. It wasn’t the handle side either.
