The Expendables 2, Film Review

The-Expendables-2-Poster

I love the first Expendables movie; it brought back the magic of the 80’s and early 90’s action films. But I was a little disappointed with the cameos of Willis and Schwarzenegger. With the Expendables 2, I was expected much the same.
Willis and Schwarzenegger’s role have been expanded and it great to see more screen time with each other and Stallone.

Don’t expect too much of a story as there is not much of one, but the film is a fun ride from start to finish.
The opens up with Barney Ross (Stallone) and his team of Expendables in Burma to rescue a Chinese businessman. Before long they are heading in with gun blazing and Jet Li showing off his martial art skills.
Once the rescue mission is completed they head home with Li taking the businessman back to China. It’s not long after getting back States side that enigmatic CIA Mr Church (Willies) turns up and leaves no choice but for the team to do a job from him.
They have to go to Eastern Europe and recover five tons of weapons-grade plutonium left behind by the Soviets during the Cold War.

Also hunting for the Nuclear weapons is a villain played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, whose name is Vilain. You can see Van Damme is having a ball with the role.

Chuck Norris pop’s up for a cameo which is very funny and plays on the “Chuck Norris facts”.

As with all classic 80’s Action movies the film concludes with a major gun fight with the Expandable being joined with Norris, Willies and Schwarzenegger and going up against Vilian and his army.

The film is not all action packed and is broken up with some character building of the Expendables. There is a lots humour with the film, this make up for the lack of story.

The Expendables 2 is another classic action film and the studio has already green light another sequel, which leaves the question, which action star will appear in that?
I give this film 3.5 out of 5.

Trench: I’ll be back.
Church: You’ve been back enough. I’ll be back. [leaves]
Trench: Yippee-ki-yay.

  1. I love that part you quoted. 😀 I saw this movie a couple weeks ago, it’s lots of fun. Like you said, not a huge story. Good guys want something, bad guys get it, good guys must get it back. And, of course, kill lots of people in the meantime. I loved seeing Jean-Claude Van Damme again, I haven’t seen him in years, but his character was very cliché. But, that’s to be expected. Really, the whole movie is one big cliché action film of the type done 20+ years ago and rarely done anymore (that was pretty much Stallone’s purpose for making the films.) In that sense, it’s lots of fun. I too really enjoyed Chuck Norris’ part, brief as it was. It was also nice to see more of Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. I’m glad they’ve got another sequel in the works. These movies are bringing in a lot of money, (both are financial successes) which means they’ll keep making sequels as long as that’s true. 🙂

For me, it was a 4/5. (that’s what I rated it on Netflix ;))

  2. Everybody here knows that they are just making another loud, stupid, crazy action film that’s not going to change the world, but still offer you plenty of entertainment in a short limit of hour 40 minutes and that’s all that mattered to me. Great review.
